In 2019, I joined GitLab as a Senior Illustrator, beginning a creative journey that would see both my skills and the company grow and evolve. From its earlier startup days to becoming a global enterprise, I had the opportunity to help shape GitLab's visual world while developing my own approach to illustration, storytelling and creative problem-solving.
Working alongside some incredibly talented people, I explored how illustration could make a complex, technical world feel more human, approachable and delightful.
As you can imagine, after seven years there is a ridiculous amount of work to share! Buckle up!

It’s Just Vic magic
From the tiniest emojis to enormous campaigns, events, characters and everything in between, my time at GitLab was full of creative adventures.
My glorious teammates had a habit of asking me to add a little "Vic Magic" to their projects. It became a running phrase throughout my time there, and looking back at the sheer variety of things I got to work on, I think it sums up those seven years rather nicely!
As you can imagine, seven years and countless projects is quite a bit of work to squeeze into one case study!

Gitlab Duo Agents
This was one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I've worked on at GitLab. What started as an exploration into making AI agents feel more human, approachable and full of personality eventually grew into a huge brand refresh in 2026.
It's some of my proudest creative work. I pushed myself creatively, dug deep and worked alongside an incredibly talented team to bring it all together.
This was one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I've worked on at GitLab. What started as an exploration into making AI agents feel more human, approachable and full of personality eventually grew into a huge brand refresh in 2026.

Campaigns & Events
During my time at GitLab, I created illustrations and visual systems for some of our biggest campaigns and events. From product launches and event design to company milestones, I loved finding playful ways to bring stories to life.
This was where the “Vic Magic” really worked well I think. Collaborating with my team and bringing fresh eyes to their projects. Seeing my illustrations out in the world was a real highlight, especially watching people interact with the things I'd created.

Internal Culture
This was easily one of my favourite parts of working at GitLab. I loved creating illustrations, characters and visual identities that represented the wonderful humans I worked alongside.
From custom Tanukis for employee groups and playful Slack emojis to celebratory Zoom backgrounds for Pride and Black History Month, these projects gave me the freedom to experiment, have fun and connect people through creativity.
